Current concepts in partial laryngectomy
- Prof. Fernando López Álvarez, Spain
- Dr Marco Ferrari, Italy
Partial Laryngectomies play a pivotal role in addressing case selection in laryngeal cancer while preserving vital functions. Historically, open approaches encompass well-known techniques such as Subtotal Laryngectomy, Supracricoid Laryngectomy, and Vertical Partial Laryngectomy. However, over the last four decades, there has been a transition towards an increased use of endoscopic approaches like Transoral Laser Microsurgery (TLM), Transoral Robotic Surgery (TORS), and Endoscopic Laser Resection. This shift is conceptually supported by the advantages of minimally invasive techniques, considering their precision, reduced postoperative complications, and the evolving role of robotic assistance.
However, there are multiple reasons that need to be considered before choosing between an Open or Endoscopic approach, such as tumor characteristics, patient anatomy, and surgeon expertise. It is also relevant to understand the main points about postoperative care and rehabilitation, emphasizing multidisciplinary collaboration, speech therapy, and patient support. These factors make it mandatory to synthesize key insights from both techniques, offering a comprehensive understanding of the dynamic interplay between surgical precision, functional preservation, and future possibilities.
Advantages of endoscopic ear surgery: Patient's and surgeon's perspective
- Prof. Dr. Serena Preyer, Germany
- Prof. Dr. Adrian James, Canada
Endoscopic ear surgery is an emerging technique for the minimally invasive treatment of otologic diseases. Serena Preyer and Adrian James are absolute pioneers of the technique and will present the advantages of the endoscope in otology from their long-standing clinical and scientific experience. The aim of this webinar is to demonstrate the benefits of the technique in the surgical treatment of pediatric and adult patients covering the whole spectrum of middle ear diseases. Moreover, the perspective of the surgeon and especially advantages offered by the use of endoscopes for the trainees in ear surgery are illuminated.
Neuromonitoring in Thyroid and Parathyroid Surgery
- Mr. George Mochloulis MD, FRCS, United Kingdom
- Mr. Panos Dimitriadis MBChB, MSc (UCL), FRCS, United Kingdom
The aim of the webinar was:
- To provide participants with a comprehensive understanding of the principles, techniques, and applications of intra-operative nerve monitoring (IONM) in thyroid surgery.
- To demonstrate how IONM can enhance safety and precision of thyroid surgery.
- To demonstrate surgical steps and interpretation of Continuous IONM Electromyography data (including Threshold, Latency, Amplitude and their clinical relevance)
We aim for the presentation to be informative but also relevant to participants’ practice and will include video clips and pictures showing IONM set-up, surgical steps and relevant EMG graphs.
How to setup a vestibular clinic
Julia is an otorhinolaryngologist with a great passion for neurotology. Working in the field for over 15 years, she has gained a broad experience in all kinds of vertigo clinics – from running a “one-woman-show” to being part of an interdisciplinary and multiprofessional team. She is looking forward to sharing the “pearls and pitfalls” of setting up your own vertigo clinic with you. In particular, she will cover the following topics:
• What background knowledge of neurotology and which clinical skills do I need?
• Which technical resources do I need?
• How to set up a vestibular team?
• What to do when times are rough
