Current concepts in partial laryngectomy

April 3, 2024
Moderator: Dr Carlos Chiesa-Estomba, Spain
Speakers:
  • Prof. Fernando López Álvarez, Spain
  • Dr Marco Ferrari, Italy

Partial Laryngectomies play a pivotal role in addressing case selection in laryngeal cancer while preserving vital functions. Historically, open approaches encompass well-known techniques such as Subtotal Laryngectomy, Supracricoid Laryngectomy, and Vertical Partial Laryngectomy. However, over the last four decades, there has been a transition towards an increased use of endoscopic approaches like Transoral Laser Microsurgery (TLM), Transoral Robotic Surgery (TORS), and Endoscopic Laser Resection. This shift is conceptually supported by the advantages of minimally invasive techniques, considering their precision, reduced postoperative complications, and the evolving role of robotic assistance.

However, there are multiple reasons that need to be considered before choosing between an Open or Endoscopic approach, such as tumor characteristics, patient anatomy, and surgeon expertise. It is also relevant to understand the main points about postoperative care and rehabilitation, emphasizing multidisciplinary collaboration, speech therapy, and patient support. These factors make it mandatory to synthesize key insights from both techniques, offering a comprehensive understanding of the dynamic interplay between surgical precision, functional preservation, and future possibilities.

Advantages of endoscopic ear surgery: Patient's and surgeon's perspective

February 7, 2024
Moderator: Prof. Dr. Lukas Anschuetz, Switzerland
